Stained Glass Windows
What
is stained glass?
"Stained glass" can mean colored, painted or enameled glass, or glass tinted with true
"glass stains", the term refers to both colored and painted glass. "Leaded glass" refers basically to all glass assemblies held in place by lead, copper, or zinc cames. Whether the glass itself is colored or clear, it may be known as both "stained glass"
or "leaded glass".
There is evidence that the Romans used
colored glass set in lead to form windows in houses. Painting details onto the glass with stains which were fired in, probably began around the fifth century AD, and this remains the essential characteristic of true stained glass. The earliest stained glass windows were in churches and there are some still existing that were made nearly a thousand years ago (Augsburg Cathedral).
